Indigenous Peoples and the Struggle for Control of the Forests

Thus study outlines the challenges facing Indonesia’s indigenous groups over forest control and management. As indigenous people’s relationships and usage of forest systems varies across Indonesia, so do systems of land use and land tenure, or community based forestry systems. Indonesia’s Constitutional Court decision (case no. 35 of 2012) resulted in customary forests no longer being classified as state forests, meaning that indigenous communities may have stronger rights to forest lands and resources. This ruling has presented opportunities but also challenges, for which forest actors must respond to accordingly.
