HAKA is an environmental NGO striving towards ecological and social balance in Aceh. HAKA’s work with SETAPAK falls under the following land and governance themes;
Policy development
HAKA strives to improve land and forest governance on a regional level across Aceh. The organization is working to both strengthen existing government policies on forest governance and create new forest protection laws. HAKA assists the Aceh regional government in improving their policies and increasing their budget for reforestation. In order to address the issue at the root of the cause they are pushing for a moratorium on new palm oil permits to protect high value conservation forest, and enhancing the capability of law to address forest crime. They are also supporting an institutional forum to protect the Tamiang water catchment area.
Community forests
HAKA reinforces its work on a regional level by strengthening the role of adat communities in forest and land governance on a local level. This includes providing law enforcement mechanisms through which they can report illegal forest activities.
