Forest Watch Indonesia

Forest Watch Indonesia is an independent forest monitoring network incorporating individuals and organizations committed to fostering a transparent forestry data and information management system which can ensure just and sustainable forest management. FWI’s work with SETAPAK falls under the following land and forest governance themes;

Access to Information
Forest Watch Indonesia is working to produce a central data base of up to date maps of forest cover and license types to ensure effective monitoring and enforcement of forest and land use.

Sawit Watch

Sawit Watch is an NGO focusing on the impacts of palm oil expansion. Sawit Watch’s work with SETAPAK falls under the following land and forest governance themes;

Community forests
Sawit Watch protects the rights of smallholder farmers and indigenous communities. Sawit Watch are working towards reforming policies to protect high conservation forests and community managed forest areas from palm oil expansion. This includes strengthening the capacity of communities to protect their forest areas.
Rule of law
Sawit Watch are investigating corruption in the palm oil sector and reviewing palm oil concession permits to ensure adherence to laws.
Media and outreach
Sawit Watch are conducting public campaigns at national and local levels about the impact of palm oil concessions.

Seknas Fitra: Indonesian Forum for Budget Transparency

Seknas Fitra are an NGO working towards transparent parliamentary activity in Indonesia. Seknas Fitra’s work with SETAPAK falls under the following land and forest governance themes;

Access to information
Seknas Fitra strive towards budgetary transparency in Indonesia. The organization studies budgets, disseminates findings in public domains and formulates civil society budget control mechanisms. In their work with SETAPAK, Seknas Fitra coordinates research analyzing national and regional budgets in the forest and land governance sector. They also conduct research to directly measure regional forest and land governance.

Publish What You Pay (PWYP)

Publish What You Pay is a civil society organization working in Indonesia. PWYP’s work with SETAPAK falls under the following land and forest governance themes;

Access to Information
PWYP’s universal goal is for the standard of living of people living in resource-rich countries is improved by the eradication of corruption in extractive sectors. PWYP is working towards a more open and accountable extractives sector and is promoting multi-stakeholder forums to improve revenue collection.

Public Virtue Institute (PVI)

PVI is an advocacy organization working nationally. PVI’s work with SETAPAK falls under the following land and forest governance themes;

Media and outreach
PVI is an institute for digital democracy and civic activism. PVI uses social media activism to campaign ideas. They are working to develop the capacity of SETAPAK partners to use social media for their advocacy. This plays an important role in promoting good land and forest governance as there is a need to engage young Indonesians in environmental issues to demand action. Increasing the ability of partners to advocate their work is integral to their ability to enact social change and subsequently political action.

Perkumpulan Hukum dan Masyarakat (HuMa)

HuMa is an NGO working on law reform in the natural resources sector. HuMa’s work with SETAPAK falls under the following land and forest governance themes;

Community forests
HuMa’s work is centered on the recognition of local communities’ rights to natural resources. HuMa has conducted studies identifying potential community management areas in North and East Kalimantan. HuMa is supplying para-legal training to support communities to have their rights recognized in East, North and West Kalimantan, and Central Sulawesi. Together with PiLNet, HuMa supports public lawyers in mentoring in community legal and natural resource management. The organization is both increasing knowledge of community rights and supporting communities in accessing and defending those rights.
Access to information
HuMa conducts a range of studies on Indigenous land tenure rights and community welfare related to land use. They are also facilitating a database portal about forest knowledge, community legal support and natural resource conflict resolution in Indonesia. HuMa is supporting a national study by the Human Rights Commission to develop a database of human rights violations in the natural resources sector.

Majelis Pemberdayaan Masyarakat – Muhammadiyah

Muhammadiyah are Indonesia’s second largest Islam based organization, working towards support of minority groups in Indonesia and environmental protection. Muhammadiyah’s work with SETAPAK falls under the following land and forest governance themes;

Policy development
Muhammadiyah is working to improve national forest policies and is working collaboratively with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry.
Rule of law
Muhammadiyah is promoting law enforcement in the forestry sector. They are conducting investigations in industry to uncover corruption and are establishing provincially based complaints posts. The organization is helping its supporters become actors in change by providing investigation training.

The Indonesian Parliamentary Center (IPC) the Freedom of Information Network Indonesia (FOINI)

The IPC and FOINI specialize in parliamentary capacity building and the promotion of political reform for improved democracy and parliamentary accountability, including to the National Information Commission. IPC and FOINI’s work with SETAPAK falls under the following land and forest governance themes;

Access to information
The IPC and FOINI are working towards political reform and parliamentary capacity building for improved democracy and political accountability. They are providing technical assistance to the Information Commission including in the development of a strategic plan, as well as institutional and advocacy recommendations.

International NGO forum on Indonesian development (INFID) and Indonesian working group on forest finance (IWGFF)

INFID and IWGFF are working together to promote changes in banking and financing policies to achieve sustainable forest and land management. Their work with SETAPAK falls under the following land and forest governance themes;

Policy development
INFID and IWGFF are striving towards finance practices that are stronger against corruption and money laundering. They are promoting positive banking and financing policy changes and are developing guidelines for civil society to investigate money laundering in the forest and land governance sector.
Rule of law
To reinforce their efforts to enact stronger forest and land management policies INFID an IWGFF are also strengthening current rule of law. They are investigating cases of money laundering in the forest and land sector to report to law enforcement bodies. They are strengthening law enforcement in the forest and land sector using the Anti-Money Laundering Law.

Indonesian Corruption Watch (ICW)

The ICW is a monitoring body for all major institutions in Indonesia. ICW’s work with SETAPAK falls under the following land and forest governance themes;

Access to Information
ICW work towards eradicating corruption in the forestry and land use sector through improving transparency and ensuring accountability through law enforcement. ICW investigate banking payments in the land and forest sector and advocate for related policy improvements.
Rule of law
ICW investigates and reports corruption cases to the KPK and other law enforcement bodies. They are developing a practical tool to support civil society organisations to identify corruption in the forest and land sector.
