WALHI South Sumatra

WALHI is an environmental NGO doing most work with SETAPAK in Ogan Komering Ilir, South Sumatra. WALHI’s work with SETAPAK falls under the following forest and land governance themes;

Rule of law
WALHI South Sumatra works towards environmental protection by promoting social change. Improving the rule of law and engaging civil society in the process promotes clean local justice practices. In a partnership with HuMa, WALHI is training community law facilitators to represent local communities and enhance rule of law. WALHI also reviews production permits in South Sumatra, reporting violations, and supports environmental advocates to resolve disputes in the court system.
Community forests
An overarching value of WALHI is community sovereignty. They support communities in accessing public information and support village communities in conducting community mapping. Enhancing the capacity of local communities to understand land and forest governance issues and to seek land tenure rights leads to increased community based forest management.
